HERITAGE RESTORERS - Paint Brush Restoration

Conserve Culture via Paintings Conservation
Painting is one of the most renowned forms of art that can equally be appreciated by the learned people as well as the illiterate or laymen. The paintings have been considered as a remarkable way to express ones feelings with depiction of cultural values. Due to the use of combination of materials the painting keeps deteriorating with time as these materials reacts differently in any environmental conditions. There is a strong need of restoring paintings in order to save the paintings and the helping culture values depicted in them from getting extinguished.

Paintings and their frames are made of many different materials. These include: varnish, paint, glue, canvas, wood, metal, gilding and plaster. Together they form a complex structure that is easily damaged if knocked or dropped. Some steps that are undertaken by majority of painting restorers and painting conservators especially in luxury painting restoration are as follows:

  • Avoid hanging paintings over direct heat or moisture sources, for example, right over fires, radiators, heaters, and hot water or central heating pipes; in bathrooms, kitchens or around swimming pools.
  • Avoid hanging over or next to outdoor vents, or on damp walls.
  • Avoid hanging in rooms that are well heated in the winter especially the paintings on wood are the most vulnerable.
  • Picture lights attached to or near to the top of a painting can get hot. It is best to take advice on lighting.
  • Bear in mind that paintings will build up dirt more quickly in rooms with an open fire or where people smoke.
